The Jr. High Art program varies from year to year, following the provincial curriculum on a three-year cycle. This means that it will cover the Art 7, Art 8, and Art 9 curricula over a three year period, and that no student in jr. high will ever repeat the same course.
This school year Jr. High Art takes place during the winter-spring term. We will be covering the Art 8 curriculum, focussing on overall composition and design, and the elements of shape and colour. We will be painting, creating a batik, doing a perspective study, and if time, some stencil printmaking.

Geometric Shape Painting
|
Batik
|
After discussing compositional principles such as balance and movement, students create a design using one geometric shape. Before painting students learn the three dimensions of colour, hue, tone, and intensity, and how to control them; they are then introduced to two common colour schemes after painting a simple colour wheel. Choice of colour scheme is based on contrast, tone, and intensity.

Students are introduced to the concept of organic shapes, which have their origin in nature. Their design can be based on ancient organic designs, or it can be a stylized animal design or an illuminated letter. After transferring it to fabric they will create a batik using wax and dye.
